THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW returns to Joburg for a season at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre from 14 November 2014 to 1 February 2015 – and tickets are, yet again, flying!
Produced by Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre, Richard O’Brien’s iconic smash hit rock musical THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, which has set Cape Town and Joburg alight for months, will be returning to Joburg’s Montecasino Theatre due to overwhelming public demand!
The Fugard Theatre’s production of this global musical sensation enjoyed an initial sold out season at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town in 2013 playing to over 70 000 people. Since then the production transferred to Montecasino earlier this year and was sold out for the entire 10 week season. The production is currently enjoying another sold out return season in Cape Town at the Fugard Theatre where it will close on Sunday 2 November.
THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, directed by Matthew Wild with Musical Direction by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and Choreography by Louisa Talbot, recently received a staggering 9 nominations for the annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards in Cape Town, with Brendan van Rhyn, Daneel van der Walt and Andrew Laubscher winning as Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and Best Supporting Actor in a Musical respectively.
The Fugard Theatre’s Executive Director Daniel Galloway said, “What was initially planned for 10 weeks in our schedule in 2013 has turned out to be the most incredible monster – we are all very proud of our world class Production and we are thrilled that Joburg will not let it rest!”
The Rocky Horror Show’s superb all-South African cast is powerfully led by Brendan van Rhyn as Dr Frank-N-Furter with Andrew Laubscher as Riff Raff, Daneel van der Walt as Magenta and Fleur du Cap 2013 nominees Paul du Toit as Brad (from 14 November to 7 December only), Dominique Maher as Columbia, and Adrian Galley as the Narrator. Sharon Spiegel-Wagner returns to reprise her role of Janet, while Pierre van Heerden plays Dr Scott and Eddie, and Shaun Smit plays the beautifully buff, tanned blonde-haired Rocky. Chloe Perling, Emile Doubell, Zolani Shangase, Taryn-lee Hudson, Matthew Berry, Michael Wallace, Pulane Rampoana and Ashleigh Butcher magnificently support the core company.
Daniel Buys (of recent Jersey Boys fame) will play the role of Brad from 9 December 2014 to 1 February 2015.
The live onstage band led by Stefan Lombard and Kate Borthwick, and featuring Justin Badenhorst, Janus van der Merwe, Theo Janse van Rensburg, Jason Green and Sipumzo Lucwaba, accompanies the cast every night as they belt out the iconic hit songs “Science Fiction/ Double Feature”, “Dammit, Janet!”, “Sweet Transvestite” and “The Time Warp”.
Additional creative members on the production are Tina Driedijk; set (Suor Angelica, The Rake’s Progress, Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail), Penny Simpson; costume (Evita, Fiddler on the Roof , Man of La Mancha, Sunset Boulevard), Aki Khan; sound (for Eastern Acoustics) and Daniel Galloway; lighting (Kat & the Kings, The Kramer Petersen Songbook, A Human Being Died That Night). Both Penny Simpson and Daniel Galloway received nominations in their respective categories at this year’s Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards. Graphic Designs are by James Cooke and the Video Animation is designed by Anwar McWhite.
Show specific Participation Packs are a huge hit and make for even more fun as fabulously dressed up, fun loving theatre goers throw confetti, wave glowsticks and snap their plastic gloves as instructed by the Narrator. Participation Packs are for sale nightly at the theatre before each performance. Patrons are strongly encouraged to leave their own assortment of props at home as these items will not be permitted in to the theatre.
There will be Official Dress Up Nights at each 8pm performance every Friday and Saturday night beginning on Friday 14 November 2014.
The best-dressed person will, yet again, win an apple iPad mini at the end of the season!
